Dangers of Working at Height
This month we are taking a look at the need to educating people on the dangers of working at height.
The UK construction industry is truly diverse, it covers the entire lifecycle from raw materials including mining, quarrying and forestry for the construction of infrastructure and buildings, through to the manufacture and supply of building products, maintenance materials, through to demolition.
All construction projects share common risks and while construction companies use a wide range of safety practices as part of their safety and management programmes there is an increased emphasis on the need to educating people on the dangers of working at height.
Working at height remains one of the biggest cause of fatalities and major injuries within the UK Construction Industry. A report published by HSE states, ‘In 2022, falls from height accounted for 30 fatal injuries and approx. 18 other serious related injury were caused by a strike from a moving, flying or falling object’. However, the most common construction accidents occurring on site involve falls often occur from scaffolding, ladders, elevated place, roofs, chimneys etc...
Most construction contractors commit people to working at height either during the building phase, demolition, or when maintenance and or repairs are required.
While everyone understands the dangers of working at height not everyone is familiar with workplace systems and preventions that are available to protect construction teams while they are working on site and at height.
All building projects are fraught with risks that can take many forms; from the development of the building structures, examples could include, open-life-shafts which create potential fall through, to technical risks, inadequate and incomplete building designs and or design exceptions, or the use of wrongly selected building materials, all of which could impact possible errors and safety risks to the construction team.
Along with all the health and safety risks that can occur on a construction site, changeable weather conditions also play a significant role in the chance of accidents. Extreme weather present hazards to cranes and tower operators with an increasing chance of being blown across to the side, accelerating the chance of workers falling especially if there is insufficient side protection.
Health and safety regulations, guidance, and new legislation can be daunting when trying to create and manage a safe and productive construction site.
Developers and Main Contractors must ensure the workforce they are responsible for, have the correct knowledge and preventative measures to protect them throughout the project build.

Work-life balance in a demanding construction environment
The changing face of the construction industry is widely reported on from an ageing workforce going into retirement to the need to attract more diversity into the industry.
It is generally accepted that the industry needs to boost the recruitment of key professions such as project management and larger numbers of essential site-based roles through upskilling, training and professional development, including; Acoustic engineers, Bricklayers, Carpenters, Chartered surveyors, Civil engineers, Construction and Building trades supervisors, Construction project managers, Design engineers, Groundworkers, Mechanical and electrical engineers, Plant operatives, Planners and Production managers, Quantity surveyors, Structural engineers and not least General labourers.

Understanding the benefits of positive mental health and wellbeing in a construction environment
Construction sites have always been potentially, physically hazardous places to work. The general strategy for dealing with these high-pressure working environments is mandatory health and safety training to ensure that everyone who works on site is aware of the risks and individuals know how to work safely. The Health and Safety at work Act 1974 (HSE) is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. Full details can be found on legislation.gov.uk.
Organisations must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve a health and safety culture. It is not simply preventing people from workplace accidents it is also about organisations working towards creating safe, non-judgemental environments, where it becomes second nature to talk about mental health issues through the support of mental health first aid champions within the business.
Most businesses think nothing of investing in preventative maintenance programmes in-order to keep their equipment running smoothly, using training programmes to monitor employees in all elements of equipment handing and production safety. Protecting construction workers from silica dust
Silica is found in construction materials – Natural stone, sandstone, bricks, clay, and concrete products. It is even found in some plastics as silica is used as a filter during the production process.
What is silica?
Silica is a natural compound and has multiple uses in the construction industry.
However, exposure to fine silica particles vary between distinct types of materials with fine dust remaining in the air from many different working activities. For example:
• Quarrying and stone processing - Rock drilling, blasting, breaking, crushing, and screening
• Stone production (particularly on sandstones as they are made-up of around 70% silica) into architectural masonry, cladding, traditional masonry blocks, and natural walling stone
• Refractory production, cutting, polishing, and finishing products
• Concrete product and manufacturing and production
• Demolition processes where encountering concrete, natural stone, brick, mortar, plaster, roofing products are prevalent

What is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) Course?

It is the most recognised qualification for those that are looking to obtain their CSCS Labourer’s card. This CITB Site Safety plus course is aimed at those either already working in the construction and civil engineering industry or considering it.
By the end of the course, you will have covered topics such as:

Legal requirements and liabilities

At the start of the course you will be provided with the mandatory course publication ‘Construction health and safety awareness (GE707)’, to support you during your course and retained upon completion of the course for further reference.
The examination is a multiple-choice test taken at the end of the course, which must be completed within 30 minutes. The question paper consists of 25 questions; 20 questions are worth 1 mark each and 5 questions are worth 2 marks each. The learner must obtain 25 marks out of 30 (83%) in order to pass the exam. It is possible to re-sit the exam should the learner fail.
Certification is valid for 5 years; to remain certificated and to renew your CSCS Labourers card you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
