Apprentices To Build Houses For Commonwealth Games Village

Construction News Image
A new factory and 50 new jobs are being created by construction skills company, CCG, in South Lanarkshire.

The company will be involved in building houses for sale or rent as part of the 200 million pound Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village.

The new jobs will involve off-site assembly of timber framed houses.

The government backed urban regeneration company for the area, Clyde Gateway, has been working with CCG, to deliver a £120,000 package of support including recruitment support, training and on the job assistance. This will ensure that 60% of the vacancies are filled locally and make at least half of the jobs apprenticeships.

Visiting the site of the new factory which will open its doors in April 2010, Ms Sturgeon said: "This is a real boost, both for the construction sector in South Lanarkshire and for young people starting out in the world of work.

"The 2014 Commonwealth Games has the potential to transform one of the most deprived areas of our country.

"That's why we're investing millions of pounds and working hard to ensure that people in the East end of Glasgow and businesses and communities across Scotland benefit from the many new opportunities on offer."

Ian Manson, Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway spoke of his delight that a company with an impressive track record are keen to be part of the on-going efforts to transform the fortunes of the area.

Alastair Wylie, Chief Executive of CCG, commented: "Through the support given to us by Clyde Gateway, we can offer the majority of these positions to residents within this local area.

"CCG has over 30 years experience in the construction industry and is one of Scotland's largest construction employers. We have a culture of continuous investment in training and are committed to regenerating the area."

CCG is a key member of the City Legacy Consortium, which was identified by Glasgow City Council in June 2009 as the preferred bidder to build the 200 million pound Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village.

The Village project will employ 620 people and will include the development of 700 riverside homes and related accommodation for the Games Village. Work is planned to begin next year and will be completed six months before the Games start in 2014.

CCG currently employs 570 staff, including 75 apprentices.
