Strand Street Buildings Regeneration Continues

Town Centre Regeneration in Kilmarnock is gathering momentum as the former Johnnie Walker warehouse undergoes an extensive refurbishment.

The Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme which covers conservation, repair and maintenance affecting external building elements has been awarded a grant of up to £569,000 supported by the East Ayrshire Council and Historic Scotland.

On a recent walk round at the Strand Street Buildings hosted by Brian Gillies of Alchemist Properties who are leading the works, the guests, who included Provost Stephanie Young, Alan Neish, Head of Planning and Economic Development and Councillor Robert McDill, Spokesman for Environment and Regeneration, were shown the progress at the site since its inception in April.

Leader of the Council, Douglas Reid said: "We're anticipating that the building will be ready for occupation in April 2010. As we’ve seen today, the works are progressing well and the contract is substantially up to date.

"We have leased the building until 2030 with the option to purchase it in 2017. Bringing more jobs into the town centre and putting this historic building back into use allows us to lead the way with Kilmarnock’s regeneration plans."

Provost Young added: "It is good to see new life being breathed into this historic building. As a council we are looking forward to taking over the lease of this building.

"It will eventually accommodate up to 360 council employees in line with our policy of bringing more of our services into the town centre. Having so many more people working within the area will undoubtedly bring benefits to local traders."
