Authority Builds First 'A' Rated Building

Construction News Image
The most energy efficient building in Argyll and Bute Council's portfolio is taking shape on the island of Mull.

Work has now started on the new Pre 5s unit at Tobermory High School, which will be the authority's first 'A' rated building.

After a short delay to allow the diversion of a water main, the contractor is back on site and the timber kit is due to arrive on January 6.

The building, which will provide places for 23 children, will be completed by summer 2010.

The Tobermory Pre 5 unit will boast the first pellet biomass boiler to be installed in a Council building.

Among its other more striking features are sheeps' wool insulation to the floors, recycled newspaper insulation in the walls, a heat recovery ventilation unit to pre-heat incoming air and the use of eco-paints internally.

The boiler, heat recovery unit and insulation have been partly funded by CARES (Community and Renewable Energy Scheme across Scotland).

The Tobermory building will also feature untreated home grown Scottish larch cladding throughout.

Argyll and Bute Council's spokesperson for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor Isobel Strong, said she was delighted that the construction is progressing.

"This is a much-needed facility for the Tobermory area, and I know how much the local parents and children are looking forward to seeing it open," she added.

"The fact that the building is going to achieve several 'firsts' for the Council in terms of its energy efficiency and sustainability makes it particularly exciting.

"I will continue to follow its progress with interest, and very much look forward to visiting the facility and meeting the staff and pupils once it is up and running."
