Investment To Benefit Motorway Users

A £2 million package of M8 improvement works is set to kick off this month.

The M8 works will tie in with the M74 Completion project, currently being constructed in the southside of Glasgow, and be managed by Transport Scotland’s operating company, Amey.

The works, which were recently awarded by Transport Scotland to Merson Signs, Graham Construction and Amey, take place between Junctions 22, Plantation, and 25, Cardonald. They will first see refurbishment and installation of new gantries to include a new fourth lane, removal of the old gantries, realignment of Junction 23 and finally permanent separation of the M8 westbound at Junction 23, Dumbreck.

Alex Joannides, Project Manager at Transport Scotland said: “We’re pleased to see the award and start of these final intervention works on the M8 for the tie in with the new M74. These works will ensure that there is a smooth connection once the M74 completion project is finished.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst our operating company completes these final preparations on the M8 and ask for continued patience from neighbours and motorists.”

The works package complements a series of upgrades already undertaken by Amey, including conversion of hard shoulders into running lanes and barrier works.

Colin Mackenzie, Amey’s unit manager for south west Scotland said: “We’re working closely with a wide range of parties including Transport Scotland, the police, Glasgow City Council and specialist contractors to carefully programme the delivery of these works while keeping traffic moving and considering homes located in close proximity.”

The M74 Completion project will finish a vital part of the west of Scotland’s motorway network. The new five mile (eight km’s) stretch of road will continue the motorway from the Fullarton Road Junction, near Carmyle, to the M8 west of the Kingston Bridge.

The completion of the M74 will bring with it huge benefits to people throughout the west of Scotland in terms of improved connections, reduced congestion and improved economic opportunities.
