New Leisure And Retail Opportunity In Clydebank

Construction News Image
Following a special meeting of the Housing, Environmental and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday 29 June, West Dunbartonshire Council, Tesco and Clydebank Rebuilt have reached a crucial stage in their negotiations which will result in a new state of the art leisure centre and expanded retail choice at the Play Drome site in Clydebank.

All parties agree and are keen to progress the sale of the Play Drome site to Tesco Plc, who intend to build a multi-million pound superstore. The sale of the site would then fund a new leisure facility at the waterfront, Queens Quay, adding to the regeneration of the area.

David McMillan, Chief Executive said: “Although talks are at an early stage, West Dunbartonshire Council, Tesco and Clydebank Rebuilt are keen to work together on these exciting developments for the residents of Clydebank."

He continued: “The future of the new leisure facility is solely dependent on the sale of the existing site and I am confident all parties will work together to see this new venture develop.”

The proposed redevelopment of part of the Queens Quay site for a new leisure centre represents the best opportunity for the future provision of high quality leisure facilities in the Clydebank area, as well as complimenting the redevelopment of the Queens Quay area.

Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager Tony McElroy said: "We are keen to make a multi-million pound investment in Clydebank. As well as creating hundreds of new jobs for the area, a new store will help with the continued regeneration in Clydebank.

"Tesco are pleased to be working in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council to bring this substantial jobs boost to the town."

Since early September 2009, Council officers have worked closely with the development staff of Tesco and their legal and technical representatives and have negotiated a position whereby both parties have agreed the main commercial terms of a disposal and both parties are close to being in a position to sign up to final missives for the sale of the Play Drome site.
