State Of The Art Recycling Facility For Glasgow

IKM Consulting is supporting the development of a new £6M state of the art materials recycling facility in Glasgow.

The new Shanks' facility which is set to open soon will complement its existing plant in Blochairn and is part of the company's plan to increase the amount of material recycled and recovered and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The new materials recycling facility, which is in the final stages of its fit-out and construction, will be based in a specially created building that will have the capacity for processing 150,000 tonnes of waste and co-mingled recyclables per year from Shanks' municipal, commercial and industrial customers before being sent on for further recycling and manufacture into new items.

The facility has been designed to be environmentally friendly maximising the use of natural daylight and incorporating a system for collecting rainwater for use in washdown and dust suppression. It will process different grades of plastic, paper, cardboard and metals using state of the art plant and equipment.

IKM's role on-site has included assisting with environmental and geotechnical investigations for the design of the facility, supporting the planning process and building warrant applications, undertaking the preparation of contracts and detailed engineering designs and supervising the construction process, being undertaken by Glasgow based contractor Luddon Construction.

Andrew Parsons, environmental director at IKM Consulting, said: "IKM has delivered a comprehensive service for the building of the new recycling plant. We have taken a leading role in supporting the development of the facility from its conception and ensuring the facility is able to operate in harmony with its existing neighbours.

"The new Shanks' recycling plant is a great sustainable initiative for Glasgow and we are proud to be involved in the project. The hi-tech recycling plant is of the highest quality and will provide an excellent service for clients."
