Kier-Built Nuclear Bunker To Be Resurrected

A disused nuclear bunker, which was initially built by Kier in 1990 to house the Scottish government in the event of a Cold War attack, will be brought back to life through the generosity and expertise of Kier Scotland.

The bunker is located within the community-owned ex WWII prisoner of war camp at Cultybraggan, situated on the outskirts of the beautiful rural Perthshire village of Comrie, 24 miles west of Perth. In 2007 the bunker was purchased from the MOD by the Comrie Development Trust (CDT) on behalf of the people of Comrie. Sadly, the bunker has lain dormant since the camp ceased to be used by the MOD in 2004, but recently the CDT decided to approach Kier Scotland for its assistance in reviving the bunker in the hope that one day this fascinating building could be put to good use.

The CDT is working towards the community vision for Cultybraggan Camp and has developed the site over the last three years, upgrading the drainage, sewage, electricity, telecoms and water.

Kier Scotland has loaned the help and expertise of building services manager Derek Reid to the project, to assess a variety of potential uses for the bunker.

Kier Scotland Managing Director Derek Fothergill commented: "Kier Scotland is only too happy to continue to be a part of the history of this fascinating building, which we believe to be the last nuclear bunker to be built in the UK. The bunker is already very much a part of the local landscape and transforming it into a business hub for the community will give this unique structure a new lease of life. We will continue to lend our support to this project wherever possible."

The two-storey bunker will be marketed for lease or sale both locally by the trust and nationally by Carter Jonas. The trust is calling for interested parties to come forward and develop this truly unique building set within the magnificent backdrop of the surrounding hills and glens on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
