The £170m Fife General Hospitals and Maternity Services PPP project for NHS Fife is progressing well.
A joint venture of Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) and Balfour Beatty Construction is responsible for the construction of the project.
This healthcare contract is one of the largest projects in the UK and involves the provision of a 51,000m2 new hospital wing, linked to the existing Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
The construction of the new wing is part of a long-term strategy to transform health services in Fife. The new building will provide state-of-the art facilities including a new accident and emergency department, maternity and children’s services and specialist surgical and medical wards. Acute and specialist inpatient activity and a trauma centre will also feature in the new extension.
Wards have been designed around the acute needs of patients and will have at least 50% single rooms. All patient and treatment rooms will have good natural light.
John More, operations director said: “We remain focused and committed to providing a landmark facility for Fife in 2011. Our extensive use of Modular Systems + includes toilet pods (275 no), multi service modules including mechanical, electrical and medi-gas systems and modular wiring, has provided an excellent platform to improve programme milestones, minimise waste and create consistency of delivery to the benefit of the project’s stakeholders.”
The facility is due to be handed over to NHS Fife in October 2011 and expected to be opened to patients in January 2012.
