Regeneration Plan Nabs Big Award

Plans to regenerate an area of 1960s/70s social housing in Dundee have been selected for a prestigious national award.

The Mill o' Mains Community Regeneration master plan gained Dundee City Council and its partners, Home Scotland and HTA an award in the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning.

The awards, run by the Scottish Government, now in their 14th year, promote quality developments achieved through effective planning processes and celebrate positive contributions by individuals and organisations that enable high quality development.

Convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee Will Dawson said: "The Mill o' Mains master plan was one of only four projects given an award from a total of 33 entries from across Scotland. The recognition of the judges for this exciting and interesting scheme that has been backed by the community is a real accolade for the staff involved and I would like to add my congratulations to them."

Home Scotland’s head of development, David Zwirlein, commented: "Home Scotland is delighted to be part of the winning team. We're proud of working closely with residents and their ideas have been extremely valuable and clearly woven into our plans. Our homes are designed to compliment and retain the best features of existing local architecture and it’s great the judges picked up on this."

A panel of three judges make their recommendations for awards and commendations to Scottish Ministers.

The judges welcomed the straightforward approach taken by the Mill o' Mains project to dealing with the significant quality of life issues, typically faced across Scotland.

They pointed out that it clearly demonstrated working purposefully with key stakeholders and the comprehensive consultation approach ensured that the community felt it had a stake in the project.
