Assembly Rooms Refurb Lands HLF Grant

The City of Edinburgh Council's regeneration of one of the city's best-loved events venues has been given a very welcome funding boost.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced a grant of £441,000 for the restoration of the A-listed Assembly Rooms in George Street.

The announcement follows recent funding contributions towards the project from both Historic Scotland and the Scottish Government.

Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor, said: "Work is already under way to transform Edinburgh’s much loved Assembly Rooms into one of the most sought after events and performance hubs in the UK. The contractors are on site and are working on the first phase of the refurbishment. This much appreciated grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund follows on from equally welcome recent contributions from both the Scottish Government and Historic Scotland."

Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: "The Heritage Lottery Fund is delighted to support a project which will inject new life, light and splendour into the Assembly Rooms. This beautiful venue has its roots in Edinburgh's social, architectural and cultural history. The refurbishment will allow it to sparkle once again for the benefit of residents and visitors to the city for many years to come."

The renovation will transform the Assembly Rooms into a premier events hub fit for the 21st century, providing top level facilities all year round, including the summer festivals.

The Assembly Rooms' potential following its refurbishment is widely acknowledged and the building has already attracted significant interest from across the restaurant, retail and venue operator sectors.

The project is scheduled for completion in time for the venue to play a key role in the Cultural Olympiad in summer 2012.
