School-children from Kildrum Primary School can fly their Green Flag with pride after a leading Scottish construction firm donated and installed a flagpole.
City Building – the contractor delivering leading housing provider Sanctuary Scotland’s £7.1m Beechwood Court development in North Carbrain – donated the flagpole so pupils could show off their Green Flag, awarded under the prestigious Eco-Schools programme.
The Green Flag was hoisted on Wednesday for the first time by Kildrum Primary School pupils at a ceremony marking the official unveiling of the flagpole.
Principal Teacher Ann Davis said: “Our pupils put in a lot of effort achieving what is an international Gold Standard for environmental excellence and it is great to see all their hard work recognised.
“The Green Flag shows that a school is committed to the highest standards in environmental education and management. Kildrum pupils are immensely pleased with this achievement and, thanks to City Building, we can now show everyone who visits the school just how proud we are.”
City Building managing director Willie Docherty said: “Engaging with the local communities we serve is a key part of what we believe in at City Building. We are pleased to have the opportunity to build these 73 homes for Sanctuary Scotland and so when we heard the local primary school were in need of a flagpole, we were only too glad to step in and help out.”
Sanctuary Cumbernauld will manage the new Beechwood Court homes on behalf of Sanctuary Scotland. Both Associations are members of leading social enterprise Sanctuary Group.
Alex Clark, chairman of Sanctuary Cumbernauld, added: “When the Beechwood Court development is available for occupancy in summer 2012, many of the young children who will be living there will attend Kildrum Primary School so it was great that City Building were able to help out in this manner.”
