Whitfield Regeneration Progresses

Further significant progress on the regeneration of a Dundee housing scheme could be made if councillors back a plan to demolish one of the final Skarne blocks.

The block at 37-52 Ormiston Crescent contains16 flats and the move follows recent similar demolitions in the area to make way for low density housing with a mix of social landlords and owner occupiers.

Jimmy Black, convener of Dundee City Council's housing committee said: "At the moment we are considering two or three different ways of moving forward in partnership with our tenants and Angus Housing Association.

"They created a show house to demonstrate to tenants what their homes could be like, and they were generally impressed. Their response convinced us that it was worth taking this to the next stage. The block we're removing dominates the area and needs to go.

"We hope Angus Housing Association will build new homes on the cleared site but we don't want to demolish any homes unnecessarily, and improving two blocks will mean 24 families will have warm, comfortable homes in an increasingly popular area."

A report to the housing committee on Monday (May 9) will ask councillors to agree the demolition and to consult with tenants and Angus Housing Association on the future of the blocks at 53-64 Ormiston Crescent.

Angus Housing Association has already expressed an interest in taking over the houses in these blocks and refurbishing them, however financial details are still being worked on.

Cllr Black added: "Angus Housing Association is still working out how much the project will cost, but it will certainly involve hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment for Whitfield."

If councillors give the move their support a further detailed report will be brought to a future housing committee.
