Market Street Regeneration Moves Forward

Fife Council's Transportation Services are making good progress with the regeneration of Market Street in St Andrews.

Work to upgrade the road surface is expected to begin next week and will be carried out in sections to minimise disruption.

The project to restore and upgrade the historic street with top quality materials has so far seen the footpaths being resurfaced with Caithness flagstones and the installation of four pop-up power supplies for use by traders.

The entrance to the closes off Market Street are complete and have been laid with the same reclaimed mixed whin stone and granite setts as will be used for the road surface. Two trees have also been planted and are now flowering, with two more still to come.

The road resurfacing will start at the east end of the street and progress westwards. A one-way traffic order has been put in place running east along Market Street from Church Street junction to Union Street junction and also on Union Street running from Market Street to North Street.

The works will close down for the Lamas Fair in August to prevent any disruption to local people or visitors and will begin again after the event.

Regular meetings have been held with Market Street business owners throughout this project, where traders have been given the opportunity to raise any issues with contractors T&N Gilmartin Ltd and council representatives.

Artist’s impressions of the new street design can be viewed at St Andrews Local Services Centre in St Mary’s Place, as well as St Andrews library and the Town Hall.
