Building Services Wins National Recycling Award

Fife Council Building Services has picked up the prize for Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycler of the Year at the National Recycling Awards, held at the London Hilton, Park Lane on Thursday 14th July 2011.

The award was given for a project which involved great teamwork from the surveying team, electrical team, procurement team and the sustainability co-ordinator, working in partnership with the supplier (AICO) to redesign a sustainable smoke detector, but also for the supplier to take back removed smoke detectors for refurbishment.

This diverted 1000's of potentially harmful products from landfill and has been very innovative and 'green' in also allowing the plastic, polymer part of the removed units to be recycled into a plastic wood product called Ecosheet. This product can be used on various different applications including furniture, displayboards and hoardings.

Building Services and their key partners in the supply chain have taken an innovative approach to sustainable construction methods by challenging the belief that certain types of waste deemed non-recyclable, can be recycled.

These annual awards continue to reward and support the efforts of local authorities and councils, as well as the construction and retail sectors. The waste management community is fully recognised, rewarded and represented at the National Recycling Awards.

The event was a huge success with comedian, actor and satirist, Marcus Brigstocke, presenting the awards. More recycling and waste management professionals attended than ever before, reflecting the growing nature of the industry. Over 660 people came together to celebrate and reward the impressive work on display in this ever expanding sector.

Andrea Lockerbie, acting editor, MRW commented on the evening: “Winning a National Recycling Award is an amazing achievement. Each year the standard and number of entries and gets higher and higher, making it a tough job for the judges to pick out a winner. My congratulations go to all of our very deserving winners, and our finalists should feel equally proud of their success too.”
