Refurbished Public Hall Re-Opens In Style

The North Unst Public Hall in Haroldswick is set to re-open after an extensive refurbishment.

Funding was provided by the Council's Capital Grants to Voluntary Organisations Fund (£100,000) and the European Union under the Shetland LEADER Programme (£100,000).

The North Unst Public Hall Committee also carried out their own fundraising so they could contribute to the renovations.

The kitchen has been completely replaced and upgraded, including new appliances, and a new disabled toilet with changing facilities.

North Isles Community Work Officer, Julie Thomson, commented: "The committee is over the moon with their new look hall, and are already planning events leading up to Christmas.

"This project has taken over 5 years to reach this stage. Everyone involved must be commended for their commitment, dedication and hard work. The committee would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported them throughout the refurbishment, especially the Unst community."

Once the hall has been re-opened, the North Unst Public Hall Committee plan to work together with other community groups to develop tourist activity on the island. They hope to encourage more people to visit Unst and stay for longer periods of time.

Ms Thomson added: "The hall mainly caters for the local community at the moment, but the recent improvements certainly make it better able to accommodate bigger events, such as the Folk and Fiddle Festivals.

"The committee recognises the potential of these improved facilities to increase tourism on the island and the work done means that the hall can continue to be enjoyed by the whole community in to the future."

To celebrate, there will be a Grand Re-opening on Saturday 1st October with tickets available on the door, £10 for adults, £5 for under 16’s and under 5’s free.

Ms Thomson stated: "Everyone is welcome. Folk can enjoy a buffet, prepared in the new kitchen, and a dance with music by the Alan Nicolson Band."
