Preserving Historic Buildings For Future Generations

Edinburgh is the best performing of the four major cities in Scotland when it comes to looking after its historic buildings.

A report today shows that the City of Edinburgh Council has the lowest percentage of Category ‘A’ listed buildings at-risk.

Figures released this month reveal there are 24 Category ‘A’ listed buildings in the capital on the Buildings at Risk Register. This is a reduction of five buildings, which equals 2.6 per cent of all Category ‘A’ listed buildings in the city, a reduction from the 3 per cent figure in 2009. The figures for the other three major cities are: Glasgow 16.6 per cent, Aberdeen 30.8 per cent and Dundee 20.7 per cent.


Councillor Jim Lowrie, Planning Leader said: "We are delighted that the work that the Council does to preserve its built heritage is recognised nationally. We take a proactive approach to buildings that are in a clearly deteriorating condition resulting in a number of buildings being made wind and watertight.

"Wherever possible, we work with an owner rather than taking immediate enforcement action. We will continue to work hard to be the best performing council and to facilitate the restoration and reuse of priority buildings."

Alex Adamson, Buildings at Risk Register Project Manager for the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland said: "Overall, the city of Edinburgh’s stock of Category A listed buildings remains in a very good condition. Considering the number of A listed buildings in the city, and the current economic climate, the number at risk is very low."
