Reece Tulloch and Dayle Collins, students at Inveralmond Community High School, Livingston, which neighbours the construction site, each spent a week with the company’s team at the 92-home development. Lovell is designing and building the housing development as part of its framework agreement with the council to construct 545 new homes.
The teenagers spent time with members of the buying and quantity surveying team, finding out about the different jobs involved and discovering how the overall construction process works. The work experience placements also included the chance to learn how to read planning drawings and calculate the quantity of building materials needed.

Lovell quantity surveyor John-Paul Kerr said: "It was great to give the students an insight into what’s involved in creating a major housing scheme of this kind and to give them ‘hands-on’ experience of the different careers available in construction. We believe that making a difference in communities and providing opportunities like this in the neighbourhoods where we work is very important."
Executive councillor for services for the community, Frank Anderson, commented: "The council is committed to building new, affordable housing for the residents of West Lothian.
"We have agreements in place with Lovell that enable us to provide employment, training and economic benefits for local people and businesses.
"The new homes will enhance their local communities and I’m delighted that local pupils were able to get a taste of what is involved in the construction process for such an important development."
Lovell is delivering a range of job and training opportunities through the West Lothian framework: the company has committed to take on ten apprentices and 55 local people through the scheme. Three apprentices have been recruited so far, with the rest set to be taken on later this year.
