Council May Introduce Amenity Housing

A new category of housing could be introduced in Dundee after a successful trial proved its worth.

Following a pilot scheme letting decommissioned sheltered housing to people over 45 or applicants with an appropriate medical condition, the new category of "Amenity Housing" could be brought in.

The new classification of housing proved particularly successful with 41 homes let in 12 months.

It also reassured sheltered housing residents worried about vacant flats being allocated to mainstream applicants and the possibility of "lifestyle clashes" if younger tenants moved in.

Jimmy Black housing committee convener said: "Creating Amenity Housing will provide warm, comfortable and secure homes for people that will benefit from this type of accommodation

"It recognises the particular needs of older people or their disability.

"Amenity Housing is additional to the high level of provision we already make for people who need sheltered housing and recognises that the way we deliver care to all members of our communities is gradually changing."

While the new homes will not provide sheltered warden services, they will have one or more special features including raised sockets and switches, bathroom handrails, non-slip flooring and will be no higher than ground or first floor.

As well as that other services can be provided if required including Community Alarms and support services.

If councillors back the move it is planned to introduce Amenity Housing, which is already provided by a number of housing associations, in the summer.

The housing committee meets on Monday (March 12).
