Plans For Portlethen Household Waste And Recycling Centre To Be Developed

Plans for a new household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) at Portlethen are to be progressed, following the selection of a preferred site for the development.

There are currently 19 HWRCs across Aberdeenshire, providing access to a range of service for local communities.

Investigations for a suitable site for such a centre to serve Portlethen and the surrounding areas have been ongoing for some time, with a number of sites considered.

Following discussions at the end of February, the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee agreed that Badentoy should be the preferred site for the scheme.

Committee chair Cllr Paul Melling said: "It has been a challenge to find a suitable site for a household waste and recycling centre to serve Portlethen, and the search has been ongoing for the past four years, but the committee was satisfied that Badentoy is the most suitable option.

"The project will be subject to the usual planning considerations, and members of the public will have the opportunity to view and comment upon the details of the proposals once they are available."

It is expected that the centre could be designed in a way that would allow access to be adapted to take account of any future developments in the area if required.

Officers will now prepare and submit a planning application for consideration. If supported, it is hoped the centre could be commissioned in the summer of 2013.
