Dalmarnock Station Closed For Refurbishment

A station in northern Glasgow has closed as an £11m replacement is being built.

Network Rail asked customers to remember that Dalmarnock station is now closed and will re-open on Monday November 26.

A new station on Dalmarnock Road will replace the existing facility on Swanston Street, in preparation for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

It will be a key transport hub for the Games.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: "The new Dalmarnock station will greatly enhance facilities for regular passengers and provide an impressive welcome for visitors to the area, especially those attending the 2014 Games."

The revamped station will be fully accessible with a new pedestrian footbridge, new platform surfaces, lift access to both platforms, new wall cladding on both platforms and new customer information and communication systems.

A Network Rail spokesman said the station had to be closed to make sure the works could be "delivered in a safe and secure way".

ScotRail is advising its customers to use either Bridgeton station (half-a-mile to the north-west) of Dalmarnock or Rutherglen station (one mile to the south-east). Season tickets for Dalmarnock can be used at either of these alternative stations.

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail's managing director, added: "We hope that relaxing our ticket arrangements will help limit the impact these important works have upon our customers at Dalmarnock."

The project is being funded by Clyde Gateway, Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, with an additional contribution from the European Regional Development Fund.
