Residents Fight Against Biomass Plant

A Kinross-shire community has launched a fight against the construction of a biomass plant in their village, citing health concerns, noise and nuisance.

It came after Lambhill Energy Ltd submitted plans for a renewable energy combined heat and power plant and associated woodchip and shavings production facility on a former recycling plant site in Blairingone.

But a raft of objections have already been submitted by locals, who over the years have fought against an open cast mine and a sewage-spreading practice that involved slurry made of sewage sludge, chicken blood and guts and industrial wastes such as tannery effluent.

As reported in local newspaper The Courier, locals worry about negative health effects and the impact on their daily lives if the plant goes ahead.

They are also angry that the plans have been amended and now show the application fitting into a smaller site than would trigger a full planning assessment by Perth and Kinross Council.

An objection letter from Fossoway and District Community Council stated: "The site is 14 hectares and the application must be treated as a major development."

One resident, Alan Kinloch, told The Courier: "There are considerable environmental, health, noise, air and wildlife implications… the scope for significant nuisance to local residents is severe."

Lambhill Energy maintains that there is no danger from the scheme and said the company has no plans to incinerate waste.
