£3.5m Funding For Glasgow's Historic Barras

Glasgow City’s historic Barras market and the surrounding Calton area are to be given funding to the sum of £3.5m over the next five years.

The Calton Barras Action Plan comes as a result of the Calton Area Development Framework (ADF), which was approved by the City Council on 30 August 2012.

Regeneration of Glasgow’s famous Barras market and the Calton area is to take place over the next 10 to 15 years.

The area is important to the City Council because it acts as a gateway and incorporates key routes to the venues hosting the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the World Gymnastic Championships in 2015 and developments being undertaken by Clyde Gateway and throughout the wider East End.

Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Jobs and the Economy at Glasgow City Council, said: “The initial £3.5m of council funding will attract a further £2.8m from other sources, furthering the transformation of Calton and the Barras and attracting a significant number of jobs over the next five years and beyond.

"The formation of a group - made of local people and those with a stake in the area - to deliver the Action Plan is a very welcome move", she remarked.

The programme will, according to the council, seek to create 165 jobs during delivery and an additional 60 jobs upon completion. The council hopes the programme will "indirectly support further job creation by making the area more attractive to investors and stimulating development interest."
