Scottish Energy Firm Creates 340 Jobs

A Scottish energy firm has announced it will create 340 jobs to support its retail business.

Scottish Power is due to create 300 in customer service in Glasgow, while the remaining 40 positions will range from boiler engineers to back office support staff.

The customer service roles were enabled by the signing of a three-year contract with Glasgow-based Response UK. The contract is thought to be worth £20m.

Chairman Ignacio Galan made the announcement to coincide with his attendance at the Scottish Low Carbon Investment conference in Edinburgh.

He said: "Despite global financial uncertainty, the energy sector has the potential to become an engine of economic growth and recovery. Indeed, more than ever, the industry's role as driver of investment and job creation will be crucial for future prosperity."

Investment plans have already been announced by Scottish Power which could see the firm create 1,500 jobs upgrading the electricity network.

Neil Clitheroe of Scottish Power said: "The Glasgow area has a strong talent pool that is attractive for recruiters and we are delighted to be able to continue to offer employment opportunities in the city.

"The new roles will help to support our continued focus on customer service improvements."

The company’s new office complex is due to begin construction on the corner of St Vincent Street and India Street next year. It will accommodate the 1,500 staff when it is completed in 2015.

More than 100 graduates, apprentices and students have already been recruited.
