GHA To Build New Eco Homes

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) has announced plans to build eight new eco homes which will reduce bills and cut carbon emissions.

The project began when four prototypes of the 'Glasgow House' were constructed in a partnership between GHA and City Building.

Now GHA is incorporating elements of the design into its new 100-home new build development in Carntyne.

It is thought heating and hot water bills for the new homes will come to around £280 a year.

An average 3-bedroom home typically costs around £1100 per year to heat.

Further testing is due to determine design features which best maximise energy savings for tenants.

The homes will be completely insulated, including under the foundations, and will feature sun spaces, solar panels and high levels of air tightness to minimise heat loss.

Sun spaces capture the energy of the sun and will be the most highly visible aspect of the Glasgow House, according to GHA.

Margaret Wallace, chair of the committee of GHA's local office, Keystone, said: "In a time of ever-increasing fuel bills, these innovative homes will help families save energy and enjoy a better quality of life.

"Helping reduce carbon emissions also helps us play a key role in building a sustainable Glasgow."

Graham Paterson, Executive Director of City Building, which is managing the 100-home development, said: "We're delighted to be working in partnership with GHA on this contract, which will allow us to further develop and test the concepts we so successfully demonstrated in the original Glasgow House prototype.

"We're really looking forward to helping deliver exciting new, energy-efficient housing for the people of Glasgow."
