Red Road Exhibition Begins

A year long exhibition at the People’s Palace about life in the iconic Red Road flats in Glasgow is being staged.

Red Road: Past, Present, Future opens on February 28 will run until February 2014 and will explore the history of the flats, social housing and its legacy on Glasgow and features the creative projects which were staged as part of the Red Road Cultural Project.

GHA and Glasgow Life assisted the local community through the period of change when plans to demolish the flats were announced.

The project brought a mix of creative organisations and individuals together – adult learning staff, theatres, galleries, artists, writers, universities and museums.

All held the shared aim of supporting the Red Road community during a period of massive regeneration whilst recording what living and working at Red Road was like so the experiences wouldn’t be lost.

Using the Red Road Cultural Project as a catalyst for discussion, Red Road: Past, Present, Future will also look at how Glasgow Museums record and document social history from the recent past and ask which objects should be added to the Glasgow Collection to reflect the lives of people who lived in the iconic Red Road flats.

Visitors will be asked about the themes and subjects they wish to see as part of a re-display of the People’s Palace.

Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of Glasgow Life said: "Everyone knew about the Red Road flats but only those who lived, worked and visited knew what it was like to live there.

"This exhibition looks at the history of the Red Road flats, captures a flavour of what life was like there and shows what life was like for the people who were living there when they knew their homes were being demolished.

"Red Road: Past, Present, Future is an intriguing glimpse of an iconic Glasgow project which will help us tell the stories of the city for years to come."

GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: "As we work with our partners to regenerate the Red Road area, it is important the history and stories from the flats live on for future generations.

"This exhibition tells that story through the voices of the people who knew the flats the best – the tenants.

"We're delighted to support Glasgow Museums to help document this important part of Glasgow’s history."
