Work To Start On Livingston Dual Carriageway

A major refurbishment project on a busy dual carriageway in Livingston is set to begin later this month.

Work will begin on Monday 15 July on the A899 Houston Interchange Bridge and Cousland Interchange Bridge.

Over the last couple of winters, both bridges have suffered from potholes and part of the improvement works will involve the complete removal of existing surfacing and waterproofing, and concrete repairs to the deck.

From 15 July, for a period of six weeks, works will start at the Houston Interchange Bridge. The first week of the project will see crossover points to the north and south of the bridge lengthened to allow contra-flow operations to be used. Fast lane closures will be in place during this first week and a contra-flow will then be in use for the remainder of the works to allow safe access to the bridge decks and to allow repairs and resurfacing to be carried out.

During this time the on-slip roads at the bridge will be closed and diversion routes will be signed for traffic joining the dual carriageway.

Repair works to Cousland Interchange Bridge will follow immediately after, beginning around 28 August for six weeks, and again, contra-flows will be in place. There is also a requirement to close slip roads at Coulsand Interchange and diversion routes will again be signed.

A spokesperson for West Lothian Council said: "Due to the volume of traffic that uses the A899 and surrounding roads it is inevitable that there will be some disruption to the travelling public.

"Advanced warning signs will be erected at the bridges and on surrounding routes to warn of the start of the works. Diversion routes for slip road closures will be fully signed and will be regularly inspected and maintained. During the contra-flow operations there will be heavy duty recovery vehicles on stand by to assist with any breakdowns that occur within the traffic management."
