Funding Received To Cut Carbon Footprint

Construction News Image
The wheels are in motion across Scotland to help communities cut their carbon footprint thanks to funding from the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF).

Minister for Environment and Climate Challenge Paul Wheelhouse visited the Glasgow Bike Station – which last year received over £440,000 from the CCF - to hear how they're helping commuters make more sustainable travel choices such as walking, cycling or public transport.

Mr Wheelhouse also announced the latest round of CCF funding today which will see 15 projects throughout Scotland receive over £1.4 million.

Among the latest recipients are:

• The 'Maryhill Climate Challenge' project, run by the Community Central Hall, has been awarded £97,370 to reduce carbon emissions in the North West of Glasgow by increasing home energy efficiency, and promoting lower carbon food by educating the community in all aspects of the food cycle from cooking and consumption through to cultivating and composting

• The 'Moray Bike Revolution' project, run by Outfit Moray has been awarded a grant of £149,200 to inspire individuals, groups and communities to move away from their cars and instead cycle for leisure, health and commuting activities

• The St Boswells Hall Refurbishment project has been awarded £174,383 for a major refurbishment of the 116 year old building making it more energy efficient, providing a totally revitalised hub for the whole community of St Boswells and raising awareness of energy efficiency in the community

• Everything Baby Highland has been awarded £90,171 to provide affordable pre-loved baby goods and parenting support to Highland families, helping to reduce carbon emissions by promoting the benefits of reusing baby goods and other activities

Mr Wheelhouse said: "Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our global community and here, in Scotland, we want to be part of the solution.

"That's why we set up the Climate Challenge Fund to support and inspire communities as they tackle climate change by reducing emissions through a range of innovative schemes.

"In Glasgow, I’ve seen an example of how communities and workplaces are pulling together to encourage and empower people to make more sustainable travel choices. One year on, this initiative is going from strength to strength, working with more than 100 organisations to help drive down emissions and improve the health of local people.

"I look forward to seeing the results of the 15 schemes who are receiving awards today. No single individual, group or even nation can solve the problem of climate change. But, with such strong commitment from our local communities - we can all play a part, working together, to make a real and lasting difference."
