National Library Of Scotland Launches Tender

The National Library of Scotland has launched a tender race for its Causewayside building, Construction Enquirer has said.

The contract, worth £10m, is to make the organisation's unique building watertight.

The property, which is located south of the capital, is seven-storeys tall and was constructed in two phases – in 1989 and 1995 respectively – for £50m.

However, it now needs restoring due to leakage problems.


The owner's of the library are quoted by the publication as saying: "All of the major elements of the external envelope (including the roof, rain screen cladding, glazing, stonework and water discharge systems) are exhibiting significant defects, due to the compound effect of deteriorating materials, poor workmanship and complexity of design. These failures have led to widespread air and water leakage."

They added that they are now looking for a contractor to replace the external envelope of the building in order to protect the National Collection inside.

Up to five companies will be shortlisted for the job and those interested must express their interest by 28 August with the National Library of Scotland.
