Public Square Proposed For Motherwell

Plans have been put forward to develop and enhance the public space around Motherwell Cathedral in North Lanarkshire.

The local authority confirmed it has been working on a design with the Diocese of Motherwell to open up the Cathedral forecourt into the street, thus creating a public space. This would be formed by removing a section of the boundary wall and raising a section of the road up to the level of the forecourt. The proposals also include the extension and enhancement of the Cathedral grounds to create a memorial garden for quiet contemplation as well as an area for the congregation to gather. Streetscape is also included in the plans to improve the area along Coursington Road with landscaping, resurfacing the pavements and installing new street lighting. In addition, the double kerbs will be removed to improve pedestrian access,


In a statement, the council added that as part of the overall redevelopment of the area, a 133-space car park is being built on part of the site of the former Cathedral Primary School in Scott Street. This is expected to open by the end of the year.

Councillor James Coyle, Convener of the Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "The Coursington Street project is another important part of the improvements being carried out throughout Motherwell town centre.

"The public square will create a focal point in the area, which has developed recently with the construction of the council's Dalziel Building and the new car park opening soon in Scott Street. The materials to be used will reflect the style of the environmental work in Merry Street, Hamilton Road and Muir Street which have significantly improved the look and feel of the town centre."

Work will also start on the fourth phase of the overall town centre improvements in early in 2014 and involves work along West Hamilton Street.

Details of both projects will be on public display in Motherwell Library from 7 to 21 November to allow local people to view the plans.

The library opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
