As a result, work on the interconnector – which is being carried out by Scottish Hydro-Electric Transmission Ltd, a division of energy provider SSE – is not now expected to be completed until 2019 at the earliest.

The date of 2015 has been pushed back due to delays associated with assessing the business case for the cable. It has been claimed that construction of the link is to cost an estimated £780m.
Once complete, the interconnector would export electricity to the mainland for distribution.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar had originally hoped Shetl would have had the interconnector in place this year, but a number of delays and an increase in costs has stalled work in the project.
