Silverburn Awarded Gold Status

Property development and investment company Hammerson has used a new rating initiative which ranks suppliers in the sector as gold, silver or bronze, according to their sustainability credentials.

Using an online survey, more than 240 Hammerson suppliers were rated across a number of business areas including corporate responsibility strategy, environment, health and safety, people and external engagements. The suppliers included contractors, architects, agents and engineering and design practices.

The results from the survey have now been outlined in Hammerson's first Annual Supplier's Report. Among those receiving gold status include GRAHAM Construction, which is currently working with Hammerson on Glasgow's Silverburn Shopping Centre extension.

Louise Ellison, Head of Sustainability at Hammerson said: "We have been very encouraged by the positive approach our suppliers have taken to this process and impressed by the good practice the survey identifies.

"We hope this will encourage other suppliers to raise their standards; with several projects starting on site this year we aim to drive the best sustainability practices within our development pipeline."

Jacqueline Gibson, Sustainability Coordinator, GRAHAM Construction, added: "This accolade from Hammerson is a tremendous endorsement of the commitment GRAHAM has to sustainability in supply, construction and site operation.

"Sustainability is at the heart of all GRAHAM projects and the extension of Silverburn shopping centre is no exception.

"The extension project incorporates sustainable procurement elements such as 100% recycled aggregates, 100% recyclable aluminium glazing, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sustainably certified timber, low carbon concrete, and Kooltherm environmentally friendly insulation.

"By thinking and acting responsibly, we want to set an example for a sustainable future for the construction industry and are very proud to receive this recognition from our client, Hammerson."
