Brechin Environmental Works Completed

A £2.7m upgrade project in Brechin has been completed by Scottish Water.

Undertaken at the waste water treatment works (WWTW), the three-year long project will now ensure the facility, located near the banks of the River South Esk, will play a vital role in protecting the natural environment nearby.

The facility will continue to meet the specifications set out by the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and will be monitored by SEPA regularly to ensure it meets new licence requirements which will further increase water quality in the River South Esk.

The project, which commenced in March 2011, was carried out for the utility provider by Scottish Water Solutions.

Mike Pratt, Project Manager, Scottish Water Solutions, said: "Scottish Water is delighted to have completed this major investment in this important waste water treatment facility in Angus. The facility serves a population equivalent of 11,800 which is a combination of Brechin's residents and local businesses.

"The upgrade will provide improved levels of treatment that will ensure we continue to help protect and enhance the natural environment of the River South Esk. We have refurbished, replaced and upgraded a lot of the components and processes on site so the facility is fit to serve the community for many years to come.

"In addition to the refurbishment and upgrading of the treatment kit on-site, the project also delivered the re-alignment of the access road into the works, giving better access for tankers and deliveries. The entrance to the works has been reinstated with new pavement and verges."
