Progress Made On Flood Scheme

Another key stage has been reached in the £86m flood alleviation scheme in Elgin, Moray.

This stage involved one of the project's landmarks being craned into position.

The 35 metre long footbridge will take pedestrian traffic over the River Lossie at Kingsmills. The local authority has said the 40-tonne structure will span the new flood relief channel – which runs parallel to the main river – and will serve as a pedestrian extension to the existing Brewery Bridge.


Councillor George Alexander, chair of Moray Council's flood alleviation sub-committee, said: "Once it is opened later in the summer the new bridge will become a well-used link for pedestrians and cyclists going to and from the Kingsmills and South Lesmurdie areas and the main part of the town."

The flood scheme is the largest ever carried out in Scotland.

It is expected to be completed in spring 2015.
