Proposed Investment For Tennis Facility

Construction News Image
Tennis courts at Dawson Park in Dundee could be set to benefit from a six-figure investment.

The Council's Environment Committee is expected to discuss the proposals next week to upgrade the facilities.

The Fairmuir and South Road tennis courts have already been targeted as part of an action plan, with Dawson Park said to be next on the list in a bid to increase the popularity of the sport in the area.

Plans for the Dawson Park include a new porous surface, upgrading of the infrastructure including new floodlighting to the court, lining and fence. The works will also include new socket post strainers and netting to the court. It is intended to include a system of control and charging for the use of the floodlighting.

Environment Convener Councillor Craig Melville said: "There is no doubt that the success of Andy Murray has helped inspire Dundee tennis enthusiasts to get out and get playing.

"We have seen a significant investment in sporting facilities across Dundee in recent years and I am glad that tennis is also benefiting. The council is working hard to improve the facilities for all to enjoy. I want to make sure that we can encourage tennis stars for the future."

The project costs are said to be just over £141,000, and the Environment Committee will hear that costs can be met from external funding of up to £64,671 from sportscotland and £27,878 from the Lawn Tennis Association, with the balance being met from the Council's capital plan.
