New Home For Cricket Scotland Revealed

Construction News Image
A new "world class" facility is to be constructed in Stirling as it becomes the new home of Scottish cricket.

The move, which has been agreed by Stirling Council and Cricket Scotland, would see the organisation move from the Scottish Cricket Academy at Ravelston, Edinburgh, to New Williamfield in Stirling.

Under the plans, a new pavilion incorporating indoor net facilities would be constructed at Stirling County Cricket Club, while the ground would be upgraded to international match standards and serve as a training ground for the national team. International matches could also be hosted at the venue. In addition, the new facility would create part of a planned sports village at Forthbank in Stirling, which would also be home to Scotland's National Centre for Curling.

Stirling Council's Community Planning and Regeneration committee has already approved the move in principle, while upgrading work is expected to commence at New Williamfield later this year. If approved, the first international matches could be held from summer 2015.

Councillor Corrie McChord, Convener of Stirling Council's Community Planning and Regeneration Committee, said: "We're thrilled at the prospect of welcoming Cricket Scotland to Stirling and very much look forward to progressing this project with them. As Scotland's City for Sport, Cricket Scotland couldn't find a better home."

Keith Oliver, Chairman of Cricket Scotland, added: "This is an exciting year for cricket in Scotland, with the national team qualifying for the 2015 World Cup and more and more people participating in the sport every year.

"We're thrilled to be working in partnership with Stirling Council and Stirling County Cricket Club to develop this project and very much look forward to moving into a new world class centre for cricket in the heart of Scotland, with excellent facilities and an upgraded ground.

"The new facility, which will be of One Day International standard, will serve as the perfect training centre for Scotland's players at all levels and international teams seeking a training base outwith their own season.

"It will provide a world class facility for players, members of the club, the local cricket community and visitors to watch matches at all levels and to truly engage with our increasingly popular sport."

Les Sutton, Chairman of Stirling County Cricket Club, said: "The excellent facilities will be further enhanced by the association with Cricket Scotland and the assistance of Stirling Council, and will provide a focal cricket point not only for central Scotland but also internationally."
