Derelict Site Improved In Aberdeenshire

A derelict site in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, is to be transformed ahead of the Queen's Baton Relay which is to pass through the town later this month.

The site, which belonged to the former Kirkburn Mill, is owned by supermarket chain Aldi and is currently awaiting redevelopment. For safety reasons, it is surrounded by a wooden fence, but as the site is in a key position on route to the town centre, a project is to get underway to improve its appearance in the interim.

According to the Council, 12 panels will be installed at regular intervals along the West Road site to help provide a focal point of interest, as well as some colour. Each panel, measuring measuring 2x1 metres, will have a sporting theme. Work to install the boards will commence this week (23 June) before the Queen's Baton Relay arrives.

The local community has contributed to the designs which have been prepared for printing by Aberdeenshire Council's graphic designers. Ashgrove Trading are to print and install the panels, which will remain at the site until the safety fencing around the mill is removed.

Heather Barclay, Project Officer for Peterhead Town Centre, said: "This has been a great opportunity to showcase some of the work of pupils studying art at Peterhead Academy, and for local young people to do something positive to contribute to the regeneration of their town.

"The panels will really brighten up the area and I hope that everyone passing on their way into the town centre will enjoy the designs."
