Regeneration Plans For Gretna Green

Plans to transform a number of public areas in Gretna Green and Springfield are to be discussed by Dumfries and Galloway Council next week.

Members of the Environment and Infrastructure Committee have been asked to approve the plans in principle. It has been said that the project would help create an improved community space that would benefit both the local residents as well as visitors to the area.

Plans for the regeneration project include four sandstone 'Gateways' which would be located at important access points into Gretna Green and Springfield, and would create "a sense of arrival" in the areas.

Elsewhere, the Headless Cross junction would have new granite paving installed, a feature wall with seating, new trees planted, sandstone detailing on gateposts and new lighting. New bicycle racks would also be put in place, while a new seating area would be created at the corner of Westgill Road with new trees planted along the main road.

Councillor Colin Smyth, Chair of the Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said: "Gretna Green and Springfield have an international profile and these proposed regeneration works reflects this high status image.

"The proposals are a good example of partnership working as the regeneration steering group has worked with the Council and the CX project to come up with a scheme which will not only be admired by visitors but perhaps more importantly be used by the local community.

"The plans are the latest in a series of major economic development investments being made by the council across Dumfries and Galloway."
