New Cycle Path For North Lanarkshire

Construction News Image
A new cycle path, located between Auchinloch and Lenzie, has been officially opened.

Constructed by North Lanarkshire Council, with funding from Sustrans and East Dunbartonshire Council, the 700m path follows the route of an existing overgrown path which the local community has asked to be improved.

As part of the upgrade, the new path has been widened and surfaced with tarmac. The project has also included the construction of an embankment to raise the path level from where it has flooded in the past.

Councillor Stephanie Griffin, Vice Convener of the Planning and Transport Committee, attended the opening and said: "This new path creates a scenic route between Auchinloch and Lenzie for cyclist and walkers, both for leisure and for people travelling to and from work in the area.

"It is the latest stretch in a network of paths around Strathkelvin that allows people to enjoy the outdoors, get fitter and greener by pedal power."

John Lauder, National Director of Sustrans Scotland, added: "Sustrans Scotland is very pleased to see this path being officially opened. We contributed funding towards its installation through our 'Community Links Programme' – a grant scheme run by Sustrans, on behalf of Transport Scotland, which provides funding for the creation of walking and cycling infrastructure for everyday journeys."
