Council Welcomes Green Belt Ruling

East Dunbartonshire Council has welcomed news that an area of green belt land in Bishopbriggs is not being put forward as a potential site for new housing.

The local authority has previously voiced its concerns over the possibility that land to the south of Auchinairn Road, which is currently zoned as green belt within Glasgow City Council and is adjacent to similar land to the north of Auchinairn Road in the Bishopbriggs area – might be zoned for housing as part of Glasgow City Council's proposed Local Development Plan (LDP).

However, the LDP has now removed this area from the wider Robroyston housing development area suggested, instead focusing on an area of green belt boundary towards East Dunbartonshire.

Welcoming the news, Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: "East Dunbartonshire Council lobbied at an early stage for Glasgow not to propose a new housing site within green belt adjacent to our boundary.

"I am delighted that Glasgow City Council has taken our submission on board – strengthening the protection for green belt in the Bishopbriggs area and validating East Dunbartonshire Council's position.

"It is important to have both a Strategic Development Plan and Local Development Plan in place, identifying where the green belt should be, to manage and co-ordinate the use of brownfield and urban sites across the entire Glasgow and Clyde Valley area – of which we are part – to prioritise their development over greenfield sites."
