Sports Facility Proposed For Bishopbriggs

Construction News Image
Progress continues to be made on plans to build a new sports facility in Bishopbriggs.

The Huntershill sports project, which would involve a new 3G pitch, grass pitch, six-lane running track, tennis courts, changing pavilion, access road and parking facilities. The total cost of the project is said to be £3.4m.

The project is being proposed by East Dunbartonshire Council, in partnership with the East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust.

Some £2.9m of capital funding was made by the Council for the scheme, with £500,000 of this pledged by EDLC to run the facility. An in-principle award of £500,000 from sportscotland has also been secured which will allow for a higher-specification pavilion to be created, subject to planning permission. A planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of next month, with the aim of opening the facility in August 2016.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: "I am delighted to say that the Huntershill project is moving into its second stage and look forward to detailed plans being developed.

"Well done to the Major Assets Projects Team and colleagues within Development and Regeneration - as well as the EDLC Trust - for their ongoing hard work.

"The new facility will provide a welcome and safe place for people of all ages - and from all backgrounds - to take part in sport and physical activity.

"It will also provide information, advice and support on a wide range of sports and physical activities - aiming to make it easier for people to get involved and engage in a more active and healthy lifestyle."

Scott Hill, Chair of EDLC Trust, added: "Huntershill will provide an important new resource for sports development to clubs and organisations across the whole Council area, with the new and improved facilities accessible to all.

"It will encourage improved participation in sport and leisure activities, with benefits for health and well-being across the board. Huntershill will be a key resource for the Trust and I'm particularly pleased we have been able to secure further funding for the pavilion."
