Kilsyth Flood Prevention Works To Commence

Flood prevention works are to begin in Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire, next week (2 February). It is thought it will take around 20 weeks to complete.

The work is the final phase in a project to improve the drainage system in the area. The work will be carried out at the junction of Glasgow Road and Parkfoot Street, and will involve the installation of a 110 metre long overflow pipe, connected to the existing stone culvert. This new pipe will divert excess water to the rest of the drainage network during periods of heavy rainfall, and therefore help to prevent flooding.


To allow contractors to complete the work, traffic management will be in place for the duration of the scheme.

Councillor James Coyle, Convener of North Lanarkshire Council's Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "In periods of heavy rain, the road regularly floods which causes problems for drivers and pedestrians in Kilsyth.

"Our investigations showed there isn't enough capacity in the existing culvert. The first phase of the work to address this was completed in December 2013 ahead of the construction of the new health centre.

"Now, in this last part of the project, by installing an overflow pipe we will take the water away from the site and resolve this long-running problem."
