Calls For Marischal Square Special Meeting

Construction News Image
Members of the Scottish National Party (SNP) group have called for a special meeting to be held regarding the Marischal Square project.

The controversial project has divided the community. The developers behind the initiative, Muse, have said they will create "world class" facilities, including a hotel, retail and office space. However, those opposed to the plans claim the build will block the view of historic Marischal College and Provost Skene's House.

Planning permission for the scheme was approved last year, and will see the development created on a site in the city centre, where the former St Nicholas House council headquarters are due to be demolished.

It is understood the SNP group at Aberdeen City Council have now called for a special meeting to be held over the development, after Lord Provost George Adam ruled that the issue would not go before councillors at the next full meeting.

SNP councillors had tabled an emergency motion to get the plans back on the agenda, but the motion has been ruled "incompetent" as it failed to comply with a Standing Order regarding contacting the appropriate Director within a certain time frame.

In a statement, the Lord Provost said: "The reason for the requirement for the referral of a motion to the appropriate Director for consultation prior to its submission is to allow Full Council to be appraised of all the legal, financial, regulatory and planning aspects of motions. This is particularly crucial where motions could have a significant impact on the city."
