Moray Councillors Approve £100m Expansion

Construction News Image
Councillors have approved plans for a £100 million expansion of two iconic whisky producers in Moray.

Macallan was given the green light for a new cooperage and warehouse development on Speyside.

In addition, Glenfiddich received approval for new distilling facilities, tun rooms and equipment in Dufftown.

The project for Macallan is a further development of the new distillery and visitor centre at the premises near Craigellachie.

Architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners have been commissioned for the project. Features include glass–fronted curved buildings with turf roofs.

The application was recommended for approval by planning officers and committee members under two conditions.

These were the monitoring of sound levels every quarter for five years and that the proposed lighting scheme be referred back to the committee for further consideration. This was to reflect concerns over possible light pollution in the rural location.

A company spokesperson said: "This is a project that will provide vital infrastructure for the new distillery and will be a site of major architectural significance.

“When it is complete in 2017 the new distillery and visitors’ centre will bring both employment and significant economic benefits to our local community.”

Glenfiddich's works involve the expansion of production facilities and also improving access.

No further details of the project has been released.

Council Leader Stewart Cree said: "For these global industries to commit to this level of investment in Moray is a measure of their confidence in the Speyside brand."
