Council To Discuss Plans For New £15.1m Primary School

Construction News Image
Plans have been unveiled to create a new £15.1 million primary school in West Dunbartonshire.

A report detailing the development, which also includes proposals for a £850,000 refurbishment project at St Mary's Primary in Alexandria, will be discussed by the Educational Services Committee on 07 March.

Features include building a new Renton Primary on the grounds of the current school in Dumbarton, as well as a Language and Communication Base to accommodate pupils with Additional Support Needs. The campus would also incorporate a new Riverside Early Learning and Childcare Centre.

At St Mary's Primary School, works would include building an extension to accommodate a a new internal kitchen and dining area, replacing a temporary dining room located outwith the school building. The school would benefit from a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) hub, offering children essential skills for future modern careers and the proposals also include a new external state of the art Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for outdoor sports.

Laura Mason, Chief Education Officer, said: "These plans have been developed to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for pupils and improve learning environments for children and staff in Renton and Alexandria.

"Renton Primary building is in a poor condition and the layout does not meet the needs of today's teaching practices.  It is recognised that St Mary's Primary requires upgrading to enhance and extend the facilities. It will be for the committee to consider the best way forward."
