SSEN Completes Future-Proof North London Power Network

Construction News Image
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have completed a multi-million pound project to future-proof the electricity network in North London.

SSEN has invested £4 million upgrading its Perivale substation in the London Borough of Ealing; reinforcing the local network that serves nearly 25,000 local homes and businesses. By upgrading the substation connecting to the area's underground electricity infrastructure, the distribution operator has increased the capacity of the network to enable new connections to the grid. In turn, this substantial programme of work also greatly reduces the potential for unplanned power cuts to its customers.

The four-year upgrade project focused on the addition of new transformers and the replacement of existing equipment within the substation - such as switchgear and control panels - with more efficient, adaptable switchgear and associated equipment that will serve the network, and those who live and work in the area, for many years to come.

Joseph Hurling is SSEN's Project Manager for the upgrade works. He said: "I'm delighted that my team and I have been able to successfully complete these challenging works; strengthening and updating an essential element of Ealing's existing power network.

"By upgrading the area's electrical infrastructure at Perivale we're supplying nearly 25,000 customers with a resilient and flexible network that will suit their energy needs now and for years to come, as they move to low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles.

"This substantial investment by SSEN keeps power flowing to those living and working in the area, while providing enough available capacity to enable new local connections for homes and businesses."

SSEN's investment in this busy area of North London ensures a power supply that suits the needs of residents now and in to the future. By upgrading this key part of the infrastructure, SSEN is helping its Ealing customers to achieve their decarbonisation ambitions; so as more of them turn to low carbon technologies they have a supply and network that's fit for purpose.
