SSEN Offers Insight Into Managing Electricity Networks

Construction News Image
As the sponsor of the 'Inspire Zone' at last weekends Energy Festival at Scone Palace in Perth, SSEN Distribution's South Caledonia region offered a glimpse into the work that goes on behind the scenes as its teams work hard to provide a safe, responsive and reliable electricity network.

The Energy Festival was the ideal opportunity for the nearby Perth depot to showcase how they keep the power flowing all year round, and also to hopefully inspire younger visitors to the event consider a career in the energy industry.

The good weather over both days saw thousands of visitors to the Energy Festival with a wide range of ages popping along to meet the SSEN team and Regional Customer Relationship Manager, Samantha O'Connor, was delighted with the number of visitors she and her colleagues welcomed into the Inspire Zone: "It was a great weekend at the Energy Festival, everyone on our team really enjoyed getting the chance to explain more about the roles they do, and it was also really interesting to meet so many young people who were curious about a career in the energy industry.

"As well as the 'meet and greets' with SSEN's teams who work on the overhead and underground lines and colleagues from the tree-cutting department, there was also a competition aimed at the budding artists who visited the Inspire Zone.

"Safety is our number one priority, and we're always looking at ways to make sure that our local communities stay safe around our equipment, especially children and young people who may not appreciate the potentially serious consequences of venturing into a substation to retrieve their football or frisbee, for example.

"We set them a task of designing a safety poster, and the winning entry will be turned into a real-life safety message that we'll be fixing to the outside of some of our substations across the region. We had 19 entries submitted over the weekend, with the youngest artist only two years old, which was amazing!"
