£2.5m Flood Prevention Works Announced In Lanark

Construction News Image
Scottish Water has appointed amey-binnies to a £2.5 million scheme to help prevent sewer flooding in the heart of the historic town of Lanark, with the work due to get underway on Monday, 1 November 2021.

amey-binnies will upgrade the existing sewer running along Bernard's Wynd with larger pipes and will also install a new storm storage tank.

During times of heavy rainfall, excess water will spill into the new tank and be stored there before it is pumped back into the sewer once water levels in the sewer are low again.

Work is expected to last around nine months. Traffic management arrangements and local diversions have been agreed in liaison with South Lanarkshire Council.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water's corporate affairs manager for the west, said: "We fully appreciate the work is going to impact the community, however it is a priority for us to tackle sewer flooding.

"We are aware the work impacts a well-used and popular car park in the centre of town and we've worked with local businesses and community representatives to make alternative parking available.

"We will continue do all that we can to minimise any disruption for the local community and road users, and ask for their patience and understanding while this hugely important work is undertaken."

The new storm storage tank and infrastructure will be installed underground at the Wellgate car park. A kiosk will be installed next to the pedestrian steps into the car park to house power and pumps, so these can be maintained.

The local taxi service in Bernard's Wynd will be maintained, and disabled parking spaces and Electric Vehicle Charging points will be relocated to the car park opposite.

Scottish Water personnel and contractors will adhere to Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance for the construction industry and the public.

Measures will be in place to ensure safe working and allow for safe distancing by our workforce. This also ensures the safety of people in the communities and locations where we are working.
