Dundee-based construction firm, McGill, has announced that it has signed the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge, committing to building a more inclusive industry, a more female-friendly business environment, and to champion equal representation on boards.
McGill has long championed diversity in the construction industry, and is seeking to tackle the current recruitment challenge in the sector through promoting a diverse and inclusive culture. McGill is part of the United Capital group, which has a high number of women in senior and Director-level roles, and has chosen to sign the pledge to coincide with International Women's Day.
Launched by Construction News, the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge gives companies a focus and a framework for developing more inclusive workplaces. Construction News Editor Lem Bingley said: "We've launched the Inspiring Women in Construction Pledge to offer a clear focus for the many companies in our sector that want to become more welcoming to women. The Pledge offers a simple formula for making progress towards greater gender equality, as well as a visible way to tell the world you aim to be part of the solution, not the problem."
McGill Chief Executive Officer, Errol Lawrie commented: "At McGill we're firmly focused on rapid and sustained growth, and one of our priorities is building a workforce that's fits for the future. The construction industry has obviously been overwhelmingly male-dominated in the past and it's time for that to change. All construction leaders need to breathe new life into the sector, and that means being open to anyone who is seeking to grab a new opportunity with both hands.
"Signing the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge is a signal of our continuing commitment to being a more inclusive workplace, and we have plans to discuss this topic much more in the coming months – watch this space!"
