Views Sought On Proposed Extension Of Trial Cycle Route

Construction News Image
Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) are seeking input on the proposed extension of the trial cycle route segregation scheme on Grassyards Road between Strawberrybank Road and MacKenzie Drive.

A review of the original Grassyards Road cycle lane scheme was held in August 2021 and requests were received by both cyclists and non-cyclists to extend the trial further along Grassyards Road to cover the section of cycle lane outside Willowbank School. Extending the scheme will address the issue of vehicles parking in the cycle lane and preventing its use by cyclists. It will also connect to the cycle route between Hurlford and the town centre (Mackenzie Drive/Kay Park Terrace).

Work on the extension was completed on 22 April and double yellow lines have also been added at junctions in the nearby residential areas to ensure that any displaced vehicles do not obstruct junctions.

To monitor the impact of the scheme on traffic flows and road user behaviour, ARA will be carrying out site inspections as well as commissioning speed and volume surveys and monitoring displacement parking. This extended trial will initially be provided until October 2022 while the additional monitoring is undertaken.

The feedback received will be used to decide how the scheme progresses.

Funding for the project has come from the Spaces for People programme, a temporary infrastructure programme in Scotland funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Sustrans Scotland.
